Tips on Saving Energy at Home

4 mn read

There are several tips that you can use to lower your electricity bill at home. These can include simple tips like changing your lightbulbs, using solar panels, buying energy-efficient appliances, unplugging electronic devices, or purchasing a smart meter.

When you’re lowering your energy usage, you’re not just benefitting from cheaper utility bills — you’re also doing your part to reduce your emissions and carbon footprint in the environment.

You’d be surprised that the most effective ways to make environmentally-friendly changes starts at home. Yes — even the most basic practices can already do so much. You simply need to make the effort to do these practices as consistently as you can. Continue reading to learn more.

Change Lightbulbs

One small change that you can make at home is to change your lightbulbs into something more energy efficient. Although it’s rare to see households that use incandescent light bulbs, it wouldn’t be a surprise if you’re still using the same ones even from several years ago. Granted, the incandescent light bulb is cheap, but it can become expensive in the long run. It also doesn’t provide the best lighting, making it even less practical.

In fact, there are already federal laws imposed in the United States to phase out the sale of incandescent light bulbs even as far back as 2014, simply because of their poor energy efficiency. Most homeowners nowadays are turning towards higher performance alternatives that are far more cost-effective — LED or CFL.

Although both types of lightbulbs are good options, LED is significantly more efficient. Compared to the traditional incandescent lightbulb, it consumes more than 70% less energy. The CLF, on the other hand, is able to use up 25% to 35% less.

More than just the reduced energy consumption, LED and CFL light bulbs also have higher Lumens or brightness ratings compared to incandescent ones. Place either of these two in a room and you can make comparisons on which of them are able to provide better illumination.

Use Time Switches

Admit it. At some point you’ve fallen asleep on your couch while watching television — only to wake up the next day with the TV still on. You may not really see anything wrong with this, but you may even spend upwards of $10 per day on simply your television bills.

If you can’t trust yourself to turn off the TV when you’re not using it, then it’s a good idea to invest in time switches. This is a device that can automatically turn on or turn off any electronic device that you plug in it. You can even set the hours to make sure that you’re limiting energy consumption for a particular device or equipment that’s plugged into the time switch.

Aside from the TV, you can also use a time switch for air conditioning units, electric fans, sound systems, video game consoles, or virtually any device that you can think of. You’ll no longer have to worry about forgetting to turn off a device so that it won’t overheat or run for prolonged periods.

Go Solar

If you want to take your energy-saving practices up a notch, then you can make the decision to invest in solar panels. Although the initial investment can be expensive, solar panels are a great way for you to reduce your energy expenditure, or even acquire a zero electricity bill.

Solar panels can save you almost $50,000 in 25 years, provided that they are installed correctly and you’re also benefiting from solar generators. Not only is this a renewable form of energy, but it also reduces your carbon footprint and eases the burden off the electrical grid. In some cases, you may even receive compensation from a process called “Net Metering”. This is because you’re producing energy more than you’re consuming.

Add More Windows

Adding windows is another effective way for you to save energy at home. When you rely on your windows, you’re able to decrease dependence on heating or cooling equipment that can make a dent in your electricity bills. Windows also provide natural illumination — a good factor to consider when you’re still using outdated and non energy-efficient lightbulbs.

You don’t have to go overboard with incorporating more windows into your home. Be strategic about it and choose areas where you might spend most of your time in. These can be the living room, bedroom, dining room, or the kitchen. Choose designs that can fit your home for added decorative appeal.

Make Minor Home Repairs

Similarly, another way of improving ventilation WHILE also lowering energy costs is by conducting a series of minor home repairs. Specifically, by sealing cracks and holes. Minor damages like these are both unsightly and can lead to poor insulation in your home. In turn, you’d have to once again depend on your heating and cooling systems to make your home’s interiors more comfortable.

Small cracks can be sealed using a caulk, but you can also enlist the help of a professional to get the job done for you. Make it a point to have every corner of your house inspected for these damages, so you can have the best results.

Key Takeaway

As mentioned before, using solar panels is one excellent way of saving more energy at your home. Aside from this, you can also make good changes — now might be the right time to buy time switches, replace your light bulbs, or cover up any holes that you can find around the house.

Make all of these best practices a habit. Although you may not see results immediately they’ll definitely be more evident in the long haul, when you find that your electricity bill has lowered to a greater degree than in past months.
